Mon 11 Feb 2019

The Shoalhaven Defence Industry Group stand was voted ‘’best overall exhibit’’ at the Nowra Show which was held on 8th and 9th February 2019.   The stand was contained in a Global Defence Solutions (GDS) shelter, with the following exhibitors on display as follows:

  • Air Affairs
  • NowChem
  • GHD
  • Sikorsky
  • Tafeda
  • Partech
  • Shoalhaven City Council, Economic Development Unit
  • UoW Shoalhaven Campus

In addition, the Navy provided two helicopter simulators which were something out of the ‘’virtual reality’’ world. Students both young and old were able to experience what it was like to sit behind the controls of a helicopter whilst travelling over Jervis Bay.

Laurie Koster, Director of GDS, is the Chair of the Shoalhaven Defence Industry Group.  ‘’The aim of the Defence tent was to showcase the variety of high tech and innovative companies in town that support Defence and to encourage young people to pursue a career in either Defence or Defence support.  We spoke to many people and hopefully encouraged a number of young people, and not so young, to take a look at the wide variety of careers available in town – and where these jobs could take them.

The Shoalhaven Defence Industry Group is passionate about their industry and are working hard to encourage kids to undertake STEM subjects.  A big push is that manufacturing has changed and that the Shoalhaven has some of the most impressive shop floors in the country.  We can make practically anything in the Shoalhaven – and do. Our businesses are agile and innovative – they don’t rely on one customer and have to be able to meet the needs of many.  This means that they have to be able to manufacture any number of products.   This is as true for Defence support as it is for other manufacturing (such as Tafeda and NowChem).  I would love for more information to get out to the wider public about how advanced our businesses are and how supportive they are of Shoalhaven youth’’.
