Health Services

Shoalhaven has a wide range of general health services to cater for your needs. Some specialist services are provided regularly on a visiting basis (weekly or monthly). Within the larger centres of Wollongong (approx 1 hour) and Sydney (approx 2 hours) a wider range of specialist services are within easy reach.

Shoalhaven District Hospital is the main hospital located within the recently developed medical precinct in Nowra.  The Shoalhaven also has a private hospital in Nowra, a hospital in Milton and a palliative care hospital in Berry.

There are 7 nursing homes with more planned throughout the district.

Nowra and Ulladulla are well served by both local and visiting Sydney specialists and community health centres.

General practitioners, chemists, dentists, remedial massage and a wide range of therapists practice in the major towns with and increasing number of services being available within the smaller centres.

Shoalhaven Wellness Centre offering fitness, back to work programs, and preventative care operates in Nowra.

An early childhood intervention service Noah's Inclusion Services operates from centres at Nowra and Ulladulla.

As a means to ensure that adequate medical services are provided locally and staffed efficiently, Shoalhaven Council, the then Shoalhaven Division of General Practice and the University of Wollongong combined to have established a regional Medical Faculty at the local Shoalhaven Campus at Mundamia. This facility has expanded to now have a Nursing Degree offered at the Shoalhaven Campus.

There are two hospitals in Nowra, a fully serviced public hospital with an emergency department and a private hospital with operating facilities. Milton, close to Ulladulla has a rural hospital and the David Berry Hospital specialises in palliative and recuperative care.

There are currently 84 practicing doctors in the Shoalhaven and 12 registrars. The Standish Medical Centre and Shoalhaven Medical Imaging both in Nowra provide medical specialists, radiology and pathology services. The Shoalhaven has 7 nursing homes from low to high care accommodation with more planned. Several retirement living option are available with new over 55 lifestyle villages and independent living units being currently built.

There are several community and indigenous health care centres in the Shoalhaven including Nowra, St.Georges Basin, Culburra, Jervis Bay and Sussex Inlet. Go to the Community Health & Services in the Business Register.
The Bay and Basin Community Resources Inc is a non government not for profit organization also provides aged care, youth, respite care and an adult day care centre.

The Community Mental Health Team offers Acute Mental Health Services, as well as ongoing case management, mental health care, treatment and support for adults with mental disorders such as Schizophrenia and Mood disorders – this service is available 24/7 with staffed premises in Nowra during business hours.

A Mental Health Clinical Nurse Consultant is available for mental health Assessments during business hours at the Shoalhaven Hospital Emergency Department.

  • Ulladulla Mental Health Centre
  • The Junction (Rehabilitation Unit) provides a mental health rehabilitation service for people with a mental illness in the Northern Shoalhaven area.
  • Shoalhaven Residential Service offers medium-term and crisis/respite accommodation for people with mental illness in the Shoalhaven.
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. Offering assessment and treatment during business hours for children aged 0-12 years and young people aged between 12 and 17 years.
  • Shoalhaven CAMHS Crossroads Youth Health Centre
Noah's Inclusion Services is an early childhood intervention centre. It is a non-government organisation run by parents and local community members. Early childhood intervention services support families of children with a delay in development or a disability. The services include therapy, education and support services that assist families to help their child grow and develop.
