2019 South Coast School Steer Spectacular

The 2019 South Coast Beef School Steer Spectacular kicked off on Tuesday 7th May at the Nowra Showground .

The spectacular was held over 5 days with a carcass judging and championship on Saturday 11th May.

The purpose of the School Steer Spectacular is to provide school students in South Eastern NSW with an opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of the beef industry through involvement in a hoof and hook competition that might provide them a pathway into a career in agriculture.

Students competed for a range of prizes over the two days in the categories of Champion School, Champion Steer, Champion Carcass, Parade Competitions & Demonstration work.

The Economic Development Office at Shoalhaven City Council has supported the South Coast Beef Producers Association (SCBPA) for a number of years as a business development network that assists this agribusiness sector within the broader Shoalhaven region. The Association undertakes training and educational programs for its members, many of whom are new to farming and operate from “lifestyle” lots.

The School Steer Spectacular was introduced by the SCBPA a number of years ago to stimulate agricultural studies within the local high schools.

The objectives of the School Steer Spectacular are:

  • To conduct a South Coast Beef Hoof and Hook Competition for beef producers and school students as a learning experience.
  • To mentor school students in the development of skills and knowledge of the beef industry.
  • To inform and demonstrate to students the career opportunities available to them in agriculture, particularly the beef industry.
  • To provide a pathway into the beef industry for interested school students as a potential career of choice.
  • To encourage students to explore further education and help reduce youth unemployment across the region.
  • To boost overnight, out-of-season tourism in the Shoalhaven.
