Fri 01 Jun 2018

Welcome to Productive Shoalhaven - June 2018

Welcome to June's newsletter.  The Economic Development Office has been busy the past couple of months on a number of major projects.  We have said good bye to Rianna Burgess, our Administration Officers as she took on a new role within Executive Strategy as the Community Engagement Support Officer.  We have welcomed Natalia Komadina for eight weeks while recruiting a new Administration Officer, Sally Bacon, to our team on 12th June.  We have had several projects, seminars and events in recent months including Naturally Good Expo, SEATS meeting in Shellharbour, Shoalhaven Business Forum, spba Breakfast, Basic Tax Training for Businesses, LinkedIn Training and Instagram Training for Businesses.

$40 Million Rail Project

A big win for local jobs as the NSW Government has announced it will invest $40 Million to upgrade 13 kilometers of the South Coast Line between Berry and Bomaderry to allow heavier trains carrying up to 25 tonne axle loads to use the track.
The Shoalhaven City Council Economic Development Office was pleased to assist with the application

Blue BioTech Shoalhaven

Blue BioTech Shoalhaven supported by Economic Development Office of Shoalhaven City Council, is a network of Shoalhaven based businesses that are creating innovative products with a foundation in aquatic biotechnology.

Working collaboratively each business has something unique and valuable to add to the supply chain – from growth, to processing, product development and to market.

By utilizing each other’s strengths, Blue BioTech businesses are able to produce innovative health products which they were promoted at this year’s Naturally Good Expo in Sydney.

Four members attended Naturally Good Expo to promote products made within the Shoalhaven.  NowChem, Venus Shell Systems, Shoalhaven Health Co. and Essence Group all displayed their latest health products under the banner of Blue BioTech Shoalhaven.

Participating in the Awards is a great way to see what your peers and competition are doing, and consider areas for improvement in your own business.

All categories, terms and conditions can be veiwed on the Shoalhaven Business Chamber's website.

Good luck to all businesses entering.  Applications close 9th July.

Flinders Industrial Estate - Set to expand

It's been an exciting time for the Shoalhaven economy.  The Economic Development Office of Shoalhaven City Council develops industrial land at three key locations being Flinders Industrial Estate at South Nowra, Woollamia Industrial Estate and the Albatross Aviation Technology Park.   In the last two years, the demand for industrial lots has been high, resulting in the need for the Economic Development Office to create more industrial lots available for business activities.

Expansion is already underway at Woollamia Industrial Estate, located at Huskisson.  Stage 5 is expected to yield 15 lots ranging in size from 2,700m² to 8,700m². It is expected that these lots will be released to the market in late 2018 after Council has set the pricing structure.

Nowra Key Road Projects

The Prime Minister recently announced Federal funding support towards a new Shoalhaven River Bridge at Nowra.

Receiving Federal support will allow the Shoalhaven to improve primary limitations of the current crossing of the Shoalhaven River at Nowra, being the inability for Higher Mass Limit trucks and oversize loads to utilise the southbound iron bridge and eliminating the current need for a contra flow on the newer bridge provided by NSW Police.

Other Projects

  • There is currently work underway to improve the South Nowra Freight Corridor along Flinders Road.
  • Northern Collector Road is at pre-construction stage.
  • The East Nowra Sub Arterial (ENSA) will be the subject of a grant application to construct this important project and alleviate the pressure on the Kalander Street intersection with the Princes Highway.
  • Works have also started on Monday, 28 May 2018 on the Bolong Road and Meroo Street Intersection Roundabout to provide a wider pavement section to allow heavy vehicles negotiate the turn on Bolong Road towards the east improving driver safety.  Click here to read the full story.

South Coast Beef Producers

The Economic Development Office has supported the South Coast Beef Producers for a number of years with the network being quite mature and relatively independent of Council.  Our most recent support for the South Coast Beef Producers was by way of sponsorship of the 2018 Steer Spectacular.   The Steer Spectacular provides school students in SE NSW with an opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the beef industry.  This is developed through involvement in a steer raising competition that might provide them a pathway into a career in agriculture.

This program provides students with exposure to the variety of careers within agriculture and a focus on the importance of STEM.

Nowra High School’s cattle team took part in the School Steer Spectacular.
