Nowra CBD Access Improvement Grant Program Open

Mon 08 Oct 2018

Over 4 million people in Australia experience disability. That’s around 1 in 5 Australians. People with disability, as well as their friends, relations and colleagues, constitute a significant group of consumers. However, businesses can often unintentionally overlook the needs of these consumers, making it difficult for people with a disability to access goods and services. These businesses may be missing out on a significant customer base, as well as potentially breaching anti-discrimination laws. Providing good access into and around your business for everyone makes good business sense.

Shoalhaven City Council is accepting applications for funding under the Nowra CBD Access Improvement Grant Program. The grant program provides financial assistance of up to $5,000 to undertake a range of improvements that enhance access into and around businesses.

In 2017 the Dog and Monocle in Kinghorne Street Nowra were successful recipients of the grant funding.  The funding assisted them with the cost of providing a ramp, handrails and tactile flooring to ensure that their business is accessible to all.

Eligible projects include the construction or restoration of ramps and handrails at entry points, widening of doorways, modifications that result in improved access to bathroom facilities, counter heights and the installation of automatic doors.

Applications close on the 5 pm on Friday, 9 November 2018. Forms and guidelines are available from Shoalhaven City Council’s website www.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au My Community/ Community Grants and Funding Opportunities.
